Infertility treatment, especially in young women’s sex life may give a bad impact. Young women may experience a negative result in their sex lives but according to a U.S study, it is likely to dissipate over time. Senior study author Dr. Tami S. Rowen of the University of California San Francisco’s Irene Betty Moore Women’s Hospital said that we should not be surprised to know the fact of those young women’s life that are infertile because these couples are sexually distressed. Sex life takes the really different meaning for couples who are trying to get pregnant since long time with no success. Rowen and her colleagues write in the journal Sexual Medicine that infertility is a condition that affects almost 6.7 million women in the United States. Couples who are going through the phase of infertility feels more anxiety, depression and stress, and that can have an ongoing effect on quality of life and the health of a marriage.
Infertility impact on sex life
In order to find the exact impact of infertility condition on sexual health of couples, researchers surveyed 382 those women, who were going through the fertility treatment at academics or private clinic in the San Francisco area. Researchers found almost 60 percent of women who were involved in the study were seeking treatment for female infertility and 30 percent were seeking treatment for combine male and female infertility factors and 7 percent were seeking treatment for male infertility. The team of researchers measured what they termed sexual impact with a seven item questionnaire which included question about a women’s amount of sexual enjoyment, perceived attractiveness to partner, inability to have sex because of fertility problems and persistent thoughts about having a child during intercourse.
The sexual impact score were measured after the result score ranging from zero to 90, with higher scores indicating more severe impact. The majority of participants in this study were between the age group of 20 and 45 years old. More than 40 percent of participants were married at least for five years and three-quarter had no children. Many of them were treated with oral medications, injectible fertility drugs intrauterine insemination before getting involved in the study. On an average, the women’s sexual impact score was 38 compared to men who got 25 in the previous study of the same couples. After study, it has been found that the lowest sexual impact had on those couples whose female partner perceived her fertility issues as due only to male factors and the highest sexual impact scores had with those women, who believed their own infertility was the only cause of not getting pregnant. Rowen said, women feel this inability as the burden so much and there’s so much emotion tied to women’s reproductive goals. Generally, most people actually attribute this inability to women more than it was overall attributable and many times it’s male and female factor both. Age also plays a very important role in getting impact on sexual health of infertility on women’s life. Younger than age of 40 had higher impact scores than those over age 40, though this was not true for women who already had a child, according to the results. Rowen adds that it would be a really interesting to do a study of how often doctors talk to patients about their sex lives. She also added that when she sees patients struggling with infertility, she talks to them about making sure sex is fun and not a chore, even though they are having sex every day for a specific purpose.
Dr. Lucia Alves S. Lara of Ribeirao Preto Medical School at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, who was not part of the study, said it seems that emotional problems are common among infertile women. According to a previous study, women seem to be more affected than men in their sexual life and they have greater tendency to classify the marital relationship as bad when the couple fails to conceive.
