Cardiovascular disease prevention tips

  1. Apples- As we all are very well familiar with the very popular phrase “an apple a day, keeps doctor away”. This phrase is very suitable for those who are at the risk of cardiovascular disease. According to Iowa Women’s Health Study which followed more than 34,000 women for around 20 years reveals that apple is the most important diet which can lower the risk of death from both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease. Apple has several components that contribute their benefits in heart protection. Apple contains pectin, a kind of soluble fiber that helps to lower LDL (bad cholesterol). Apart from pectin, apple contains a list of antioxidants like quercetin, epicatechin, and epigallocatechin. These strong antioxidants compounds help to inhibit inflammation and reduce oxidative stress that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular problems. Apples also provide a high amount of vitamin C. As all the apples provides the high amount of heart protective nutrients but eating red apples gives the high amount of antioxidants.
  2. Salmon- All fatty fish including salmon are being treated as the super star for heart healthy foods. These fishes contain the copious amounts of omega-3 fatty acids which help to lower arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) and atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries). These foods help to decreases triglycerides. American Heart Association suggests if you want to keep Blood-Pressure-Protocolcardiovascular disease away, you should eat these fatty fish twice a week.

Diabetes Risk | How Breast-feeding Is Responsible For Type 2 Diabetes?

Breast-feedingType 2 diabetes is rising with double pace and it’s affecting billions of people on the earth. As we know that type 2 diabetes is more common among those people who are overweight or obese, lack of physical activity and eating too much of sugary products but now this thought has to be unclear. These days thousands of people are there who have the perfect fit and fine body with moderate physical active life without eating too much sugary product even though they have type 2 diabetes. According to doctors, it’s very difficult to predict that who will get this condition and who will never have type 2 diabetes. In order to protect ourselves, we can just reduce the risk of diabetes by losing extra weight, burning fat and calories and involving in any kind of physical activity. Now here is a big news for those women who have became mother very recently. Health experts say that new mother has the potential benefit of breastfeeding. According to a new research, if new mothers are breast feeding their babies can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. This new research has first published on Nov. 23, 2015 in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

How to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes?

Health experts says that if new mother will feed her baby for minimum 2 months can reduce the future risk of type 2 diabetes by 50%. The study has focused on breast feeding for more than 2 months is highly linked to reduction the risk of developing of diabetes. As we know that if woman is already suffered from gestational diabetes during pregnancy have the greater chance of getting the condition of type 2 diabetes but this research reveals that mothers who had already experienced gestational diabetes earlier or during pregnancy may also have the golden opportunity to reduce the risk of developing of type 2 diabetes. Erica Gunderson, a senior research scientist with Kaiser Permanente Northern California and the study author says that we should focus on the policy of breast feeding especially for those women who are obese or overweight and for those women who had the history of gestational diabetes has the greater chances of getting this condition. Erica Gunderson adds that this study doesn’t claim that breast feeding will definitely lower the risk of type 2 diabetes but it only shows that there is an association between breastfeeding and risk of type 2 diabetes.

Link between breastfeeding and type 2 diabetes

Erica Gunderson and team followed around 900 women for almost 2 years. All women suffered from gestational diabetes during pregnancy and gave birth to their child. According to this study researchers found 12% of women developed the condition of type 2 diabetes after delivery of their child. Those 900 women were categorized in to five groups according to their feeding style.

  • First group was exclusive breast feeding
  • Second group was exclusive formula feeding
  • Third group was mostly breast feeding (less than 6 ounces of daily formula)
  • Fourth group was mostly formula feeding (more than 17 ounces of daily formula) and
  • Fifth group was mixed feeding (7 to 17 daily ounces of formula).

Erica Gunderson’s team found 54% lower risk of type 2 diabetes among those women who was in first group such as exclusive breast feeding compared to those who was in the second group like exclusive formula feeding. Women who was in the third, fourth and fifth group and those who fed their babies a mixture of formula and breast milk or even mostly used formula reduced the odds of type 2 diabetes by more than a third compared to second group women who fed formula alone. Study also focused on reducing the risk of glucose intolerance is linked to duration of breast feeding. Researchers says that mothers who fed their babies for more than 10 months has reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 57% compared to those who fed their child for two or less than two months. According to this study those women who fed their child between two to ten months has reduced the risk of diabetes by 50% compared to those who fed their child for less than two months. Erica Gunderson says new mom can get benefit of breast feeding in several ways.

How breastfeeding reduce the risk of diabetes?

diabetesBreast feeding or lactation provides rest to those cells who are responsible for insulin production. Insulin producing cells gets the rest because during lactation they don’t have to make so much insulin to lower blood glucose. Lactation uses up glucose and fat in the blood because these nutrients are needed from the bloodstream to breast tissues for the production of milk. Gunderson suggests that every new mom should opt for breast feeding option because breast feeding is the recovery period to the body after pregnancy, when the body must needed to go into overdrive with insulin production. This overdrive of body with insulin production keeps the blood sugar level under control. You can find several other physiological mechanisms which also suggest how breast feeding is responsible for lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. Dr. Alison Stuebe, an assistant professor of maternal-fetal medicine at the University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine in Chapel Hill says, Breast-feeding seems to provide the reset the body’s metabolism after the metabolic chaos of pregnancy. Gunderson says breast feeding provide a wide range of health benefits including maternal and newborn baby’s health, lifestyle behaviors and changes in mothers’ postpartum weight. Gunderson adds that breast feeding will be effective for every woman to lose those extra pounds which they gain during pregnancy. Weight loss and many other benefits from the breast feeding are totally dependent on the body type of women. There is a lot of variability in how women respond to pregnancy and lactation and in terms of what their body does.

diabetes-destroyerDr. Aaron Caughey says that Woman who has the higher rates of complications during pregnancy including gestational diabetes mellitus is less likely to breast-feed. He said this kind of pregnancy complications are leading to decreased attention towards breast feeding. Dr. Sherry Ross, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, in Santa Monica, California says that those women who have gestational diabetes during pregnancy often get the other complications which makes breast feeding a challenging task for them. In the further discussion, Ross add that in order to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, a woman has to create strategy during pregnancy and keep it continue after delivery of baby. She also adds that apart from breast feeding, lifestyle changes like weight loss, dietary changes and increasing physical activities are also very helpful to reduce the future risk of diabetes.

Diabetes Prevention | 4 Quick Tips To Prevent Diabetes

type 2 diabetesDiabetes is a condition which is effective on a large scale of people on the globe. According to experts the number of diabetic people is expected around 592 million by 2035. Generally you can find two types of diabetes which is type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a condition when body stops producing the hormone which is called insulin and in type 2 diabetes, body is unable to use insulin hormone. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and almost 90% of people are suffering from type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is generally found in kids and teens. The reasons for diabetes is associated with overweight or obesity, lack of physical activity, lack of sleep, hereditary, too much consumption of sweet food items and many more. Experts say that people who have diabetes are at the greater risk of poor cardiovascular health than compared to those people who have not diabetes. If you have diabetes the risk of heart attack also increases by up to three times more if you are a man and risk raises five times more if you are a woman. Generally, women have lower risk of getting cardiovascular diseases and if the risk increases it occurs in the later lifespan but women with diabetes may have to face the risk of cardiovascular diseases and it can occur any age of the lifespan.

What is responsible for cardiovascular disease?

World Health Organization (WHO) is expected to increment in number of population with diabetes is 592 million till 2035 and the most important factors for increasing the diabetes risk are lack of physical activity with poor quality of eating habit. Now days there are increasing supply of junk food in the market which is cheap and adversely advertised. The most important food item in that junk food is soft drinks. These drinks contain a lot of sugar. These days the increasing number of heart attack patients has the health issues of obesity or overweight, with type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance compared to people in past. In the past people with heart attack risk were lean and stress chain smokers. As we all know that physical activity is good for the health and many countries are following the guideline that how much physical activity is required for everyone and how one should engage in. for example U.S following the guideline that an adult should be engage in 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity or 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week but Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claim that the majority of people who meets this guidelines are very less. There are almost less than half of adults meet these guidelines which are required for their good health.

diabetes-destroyerProf. Lars Rydén, spokesperson for the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and many other health experts says that people should be aware of eating healthy food and exercises to avoid the risk of this potentially life threatening condition diabetes.

Diabetes prevention-

Diabetes is a condition which can affect your entire life and overall health condition. Any health issue including diabetes is a result of what you eat or what your body has observed through your diet over the years.

Several studies show that if people following a healthy lifestyle can lower the risk of diabetes and they can improve their health condition if they already have this condition. Earlier this year, it was reported that people who were engaged in healthy lifestyle such as healthy eating habits and a required amount of physical activity were at the lower risk of developing the type 2 diabetes compared to those people who were following unhealthy lifestyle such as eating unhealthy or junk food and very less physical activity. A recent study shows that if people who are engage in short burst gentle exercise are more likely to lower the risk of high blood pressure if they have type 2 diabetes. Prof. Rydén says if people will follow some simple step which he believes and recommend then they can lower the risk of diabetes and the other heath issues which are especially related to heart. These simple steps by Prof. Rydén are listed below:-

  • Do some physical activity everyday and move around more
  • Engage in an activity which is moderate to vigorous for at least 3 hours a week
  • Avoid junk and unhealthy foods and start eating leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains, lean meats, unsweetened yogurt and nuts.
  • Restrict your sugar and glucose intake or burn extra sugar consumption by physical activities. It is even better to replace processed sugar with natural sweetener found in fruits and many vegetables.

How-does-it-work-diabetes-destroyerProf. Rydén says that above written tips are very simple and easy but it requires a lot of discipline. If people will follow these simple steps then they will definitely get effective results. Prof. Rydén adds that people who have impaired glucose intolerance or pre-stage of diabetes may reduce the risk of getting diabetes and may also eliminate the risk of heart diseases if they will add a healthy eating habit in their daily diet and move around more. People should go for screening so that it can determine that who has the high risk of getting diabetes. These screening can be performed in many ways and now a days a simple way to detect the risk of diabetes is via questionnaire. This questionnaire can be finding as type 2 diabetes risk test which is available from American Diabetes Association, or the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) questionnaire. If you are getting high score it means you are at the high risk of getting diabetes and if you are getting low score means you are at the low risk of getting diabetes. This questionnaire will help to find people who really need the urgent lifestyle changes. According to a recent report, consuming everyday homemade meal is also very helpful in reducing the risk of getting type 2 diabetes. The best and easy way to prevent diabetes is to walk everyday for 30-45 minutes regularly no matter what.

Diabetes | How Insulin Resistance And Diabetes Affects Fertility?

DiabetesDiabetes awareness month is the November and you can get all the information about the diabetes during this month from various websites. So, today we are going to learn about how infertility occurs due to diabetes? Now, PathtoFertility features Carolyn Gundell, M. S. Ms. Gundell has made a crucial plan that can help the women to get pregnant and maintain her healthy pregnancy. This crucial adjustment is based on the food plan that will consider about the awareness of diabetes and also the prevention from diabetes during and after her pregnancy. Ms. Gundell leads the Fertility Nutrition Program in Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT). Ms. Gundell has total 25 years of experience in the field of nutrition and helping patients with conditions associated with infertility such as insulin resistance, diabetes, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), lipid disorders, celiac disease, and patients with underweight or overweight. As she has a good experience in dealing with infertile women Ms. Gundell implemented a full service at PCOS clinic at RMACT over three years ago for the age group of women of 14 and older. Center for diseases control has announced last summer that 40 to 50% of American citizens may develop diabetes. This announcement was not on the basis of risk factor but this is the estimated of how many people will get affected by diabetes and it will be completely preventable.

How diabetes and insulin resistance increases the risk of infertility?

Overall health condition and function of body gets affected by insulin resistance and diabetes. Effects of diabetes on health of men and women include fertility too. Diabetes is impacting the health of people worldwide that’s why since many years it is diagnosed. Experts say that both insulin resistance and diabetes may affect the function of reproductive system in both men and women. As you know that insulin is a hormone and it gets the glucose energy in the every cell in the body. So, when your body becomes insulin resistance the beta cells of pancreases pump gets more and more insulin to maintain glucose control. This overproduction of insulin can be present in your body without raising your glucose level. Overproduction of insulin can’t raise the glucose level but it can raise many deadly diseases such as weight gain, heart and liver disease, hormonal imbalance, PCOS, ovarian dysfunction in women and reduced sperm quality in men. If the treatment will not be taken on the time the cells resistance will increase and pancreases will no longer produce enough insulin and then the diabetes occurs.

How ovary and insulin are connected?

Effects of insulin resistance on women may relate to the ability of conception, maintained of healthy pregnancy and lifelong and its lifelong effects on baby’ health says Ms. Gundell. People who are trying to get pregnant should be aware that hormone production and balance, insulin sensitivity and fertility are closely intertwined. As you all must know that the leading cause of female infertility is PCOS is a very complex hormone and metabolic condition and it’s often includes resistance of insulin. Body has higher level of insulin production that can elevate the androgens DHEAS and testosterone, which can interfere the growth of the ovaries’ follicles. These follicles help to develop eggs till mature enough to be released down the fallopian tubes where they can find the sperm cells but insulin resistance can cause irregular or nil ovulation due to elevated androgen’s negative effect on follicle development.

How insulin and weight is related for infertility?

When insulin is elevated, it leads body to gain weight and especially around the abdomen. When body has elevated insulin then weight loss and maintenance of healthy weight is very challenging task. Insulin resistance is found around 60% of obese women and 40% in non obese women. The most important fact is that type 2 diabetes is found in 80 to 90% of obese men and women. Higher number of male and female infertility is associated with obesity. Lowering the resistance of insulin may help to boost fertility. According to Ms. Gundell only 5 to 10% of weight loss may not only help in lowering the insulin resistance and diabetes risk but it will resume the ovulation too.

Prevention of diabetes

Diabetes prevention requires initial testing at RMACT by checking patient’s risk of insulin resistance and diabetes. Ms. Gundell says we recommend patients who have high level of insulin resistance and diabetes to do physical activity and alter nutrition to optimize overall health before starting the fertility treatment. Actually, rushing directly to fertility treatment without altering nutrition and some physical activity may lead to failure pregnancy or unhealthy pregnancy which may some other health issues too. It has been found that improvement in insulin resistance and full health condition may help in getting positive effects of fertility treatment and having a healthy pregnancy. If you will ignore the warning signs, you may get affected to difficulty getting pregnant, miscarriage, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, birth defects and even stillbirth. Ms. Gundell says I always help people to fully understand the insulin resistance and its effects on the body and the most important how to improve the overall health condition. She add, in the beginning all the patients shares their frustrations- weight gain and great difficulty losing weight, frequent fatigue, flatulence and stomach bloat after eating a meal; mood swings and feelings of “low blood sugar”, cravings for sweets and bread products. So, all these symptoms are associated with insulin resistance. So, in order to lower the resistance the insulin and improving the health condition, the patient’s need to make a meal plan, activity schedule and of course stress management plan.

How insulin affects pregnancy?

Insulin resistance can make the pregnant women more vulnerable to get gestational diabetes. This condition can affect the pregnant mom and unborn baby during pregnancy. Ms. Gundell says if a woman has never got the diabetes or insulin resistance before pregnancy but during pregnancy if she has high blood sugar or glucose may develop the risk of gestational diabetes. It is estimated that gestational diabetes affects nearly 18% of pregnant women. This diabetic condition affects the pregnant mom in her late pregnancy when the body of baby has formed and busy in growing. So, gestational diabetes doesn’t affect the baby. If baby exposed to excess insulin during pregnancy may develop the risk of obesity in child and risk of type 2 diabetes in adult. Ms. Gundell adds in the last that I teach my patient’s that they can lower the resistance of insulin and diabetes is not their destiny. They can improve their insulin resistance so that they can improve their health condition and can avoid the risk of diabetes while making some meal plan that can alter the nutrition, some exercises and lifestyle modification.

Diabetes | Prevention And Causes Of Diabetes

Stop DiabetesDiabetes is rising on double pace. It is estimated that 1.7 million of Australian are suffering from this condition and 85 % of Australians are suffering from the type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes doesn’t affect everybody in the same manner. A recent study suggest that people with type 2 diabetes can be divided into three parts and they all have some different health condition with this diseases. In this recent study researcher has the huge data of approaches of people with having type 2 diabetes. Scientists went through the medical record of 25,000 people. These data of people collected on the basis of genetic information, health condition and symptoms. Scientists found three type of group in type 2 diabetes, and they each has the different set of health issues that are linked to their glucose level or diabetes. Joel Dudley the lead researcher and the director of biomedical informatics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York said that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in U.S about 29 million of people are suffering from this condition and about 95% people are having type 2 diabetes.

Causes of Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes typically occurs in the people’s age group of 30 to 60 but now many people are also getting affected by this condition even they under the age of 30 and if they are not obese or overweight. What are the causes of this disease has not yet confirmed but researchers strongly suggest that poor diet along with lack of physical activities and sometimes hereditary is also responsible for occurring this disease. In this condition the body becomes insulin resistance which means their body is not able use insulin properly. This in-appropriate way to use insulin causes the spikes in blood glucose level. People suffering from this condition can manage their blood glucose level by using pills and controlled diets. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes and in most cases it’s preventable. Grant Morahan the lead researcher of western Australia (WA) supported by Diabetes Research Western Australia says that this health issue is increasing worldwide and the most important factor is increasing the western diets and lack of exercise.

Groups of Type 2 Diabetes

diabetes-destroyerType 2 diabetes patients have treated as “node” or a connection within a network to find the differences among all the patients by scientists. Researchers connected all the patients with each other based on their health issues similarities. For example- a female patient with a high body mass index. She can be on the greater risk of kidney disease would be strongly connected to other patients with those traits, and less connected with patients who had different characteristics. Dudley said, we looked beyond all the possibilities that can define the disease. They need all the information which was available through the patients. Treating all the patients as node or connection similarities made the researchers to divide them in groups. Scientists divided all the patients in there group which was named as subtype-1, subtype-2 and subtype-3. Patients in subtype-1 tended to be younger with high risk of obesity, kidney disease and the retina problems which can lead to blindness as compared to patients of other two groups. Subtype-2 patients tended to have lower BMI and less likely to have obese. They have found at the greater risk of cancer and heart disease. Patients from subtype-3 found to be more prevalence of heart disease as well with greater risk of mental illness and allergies. Researchers looking for the other groups also and if these findings can be confirmed, they may help doctors to treat their patients in a more specific ways. Researchers also found that people with type 2 diabetes because of genetic profile revealed thousands of genetic variants such as nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs, in hundreds of genes. Those variants were similar among all the people within each of the three subtypes.
